After twenty minutes of dragging my gear across the dry Santiago river bed to the camping grounds at the farthest corner of Irvine Park, I set up my easel beneath a large sandstone boulder and began to paint.
Looking up, I saw the layers of stone as a pattern of alternating warm and cool colors
set against a bright blue sky. My biggest problem was keeping my balance in the chair I had brought with me, since the legs of the chair were constantly sinking into gopher holes.
